March 21 Below the belt with sexologist and Zenzsual founder Dr. Sofia Herrera
In today's episode, we talk all things private and talk secrets with Dr. Sophia who is a wealth of knowledge and a real joy to follow. I'm obsessed with them and their entire product line, and what they do for the health of our women, especially in midlife. Often times, sexual health and the conversation seem “taboo,” but it is a really important topic for us to discuss openly. In this episode, I asked her about all the things many of us might be afraid (or embarrassed) to ask!
Women's health is largely misunderstood. Unlike men, women go through a lot of changes in life and we have to constantly adapt. A lack of knowledge about these changes can lead a woman to make decisions that may have some harmful consequences. Dr. Sophia set out to teach women, like us in middle age, about more intimate sexual health.
Pain during intercourse after having a baby seems to worsen in menopause and middle age
Pain during intercourse is the number one killer of someone's sex drive. When you're constantly in pain, you probably won't want or like having sex. Postpartum pain is naturally caused by the hormonal changes a woman goes through (regardless of the method of birth). During this time, a woman's body is preparing to feed and care for the baby, so all the hormones that are produced in our brains and ovaries actually suppress desire and vaginal lubrication – which is the main cause of the pain you may feel during this period. Time (plus possible vaginal tearing from childbirth). Since women are so creative, if we feel pain and are not aware of the changes happening in our bodies, we may jump to conclusions that there is something wrong with us, and hide in our brains the “desire” for intercourse. This is the easiest pain to relieve Correct lubrication Or change our access techniques.
What should you look for in a lubricant?
There's a ton of lubricant out there. Unfortunately, many of them cause some not-so-pleasant side effects. The ideal lubricant is water-based. If they are not water-based, they tend to be greasy, will stick to the vaginal tissue and can cause a range of infections. You also want to make sure you use one without glycerin, without silicone, without fragrance/flavor, without phenoxyethanol, and without parabens. All of these can cause really bad side effects. In addition to being water-based, you want to look for a product that is actually good for you even after intercourse. One that contains hyaluronic acid is actually a moisturizer for your body (who knew you had to moisturize your vagina?!)
What happens to the vagina as we age?
Our bodies and vulvas depend a lot on estrogen. As we age, our hormones change and diminish. When estrogen starts to decline, we can become really dry. As we age, the vagina loses the ability to hold as much water as it once did. When this happens, we can feel dehydrated. Imagine a sponge. When wet, it is plump, plump and spongy. When dry, it is shriveled, rough, and not plump and plump. This is exactly what happens as we age, which is why the vagina becomes lubricated with it High quality gels Very important. The gels act like water to a sponge, added daily to your vagina (externally and internally), and will “keep your sponge hydrated, healthy and plump.”
What happens with smell in middle age?
After a woman gets her first period, and even after menopause, a woman gets a very specific smell to that area of her body. It's not the scent of flowers or strawberries! Sorry ladies. No, it can't smell like perfume. It smells like vaginal odor and is slightly acidic. And yes, when we exercise, it may smell like BO because it's actually the only other place in our body (the folds between our legs and the vulva) that has the same type of glands as our armpits! It's normal (even if we don't like it!) Even if we don't like the smell, it's not healthy to clean inside the vagina (like douching). When you do this, you affect the microbes in the vaginal microbiome that protect us from infection. The only safe place to clean is the outside of the vulva, not the inside. The inside is like an oven, and the inside cleans itself. To clean your vulva, make sure you use something soft that doesn't contain detergent (look for SYNDET), hyaluronic acid, and other substances. Good ingredients for your lady parts Like Zenzsual cleanser. Make sure not to overdo it with cleaning and only wash it once or twice a day.
Listen up, this and much more (including games and technology) is in the episode! You should listen and learn what Dr. Sophia has to share with us.
